México esta sufriendo -mas que la Influenza- una serie en cadena de reacciones xenofobicas, raciales y despectivas hacia su población en todo el mundo.
La desinformación, los estereotipos, la falta de criterio y pensar con el hígado en lugar de utilizar el cerebro producen situaciones como esta: Un locutor de Boston fue suspendido indefinidamente en una cadena de estaciones de radio de EUA por realizar comentarios xenofobicos contra lo que el llama 'criminaliens' (Criminal Aliens: Extranjeros Criminales).
Jay Severin, un locutor de radio de ultraderecha fue suspendido ayer por tiempo indefinido por la estación de radio WTKK de Boston, MA por los comentarios anteriormente mencionados.
La nota especifica que fue por los comentarios anti-mexicanos por los que fue suspendido, pero el locutor también tuvo palabras para Janet Napolitano por esta "Gripa Porcina (sic) alias Gripa Janet Napolitano". Napolitano es la Directora del Departamento de Seguridad Interna que regula las fronteras de Estados Unidos. Ella se ha opuesto fuertemente a cerrar la frontera.
"Los hospitales para los mexicanos en EUA son ahora sus condominios" agrego Jay Severin.
Lo mas curioso para mi, es que el locutor no se arrepiente de sus declaraciones. Al contrario -esto es lo mas chistoso de la nota- el planea demandar legalmente a la estación de radio que lo suspendió, porque -dice el- desde que fue contratado siempre ha despotricado contra los extranjeros, así que 'no hay motivo para despedirme'.

Allan Poe se habría perdido entre tanta desinformación en torno de la pandemia que viene. “La muerte de la máscara A H1N1” habría sido un título inconcebible, para nada comercial. Su posteridad habría sucumbido. ¿Quién habrá decidido ponerle este nombre tan poco periodístico? ¿Acaso la OMS no sabe que los diarios vivimos de los titulares? Palabras cortas e impactantes que atrapen al lector: “Gripe porcina”. Era poco elegante, pero cumplía. Las dosis de alarmismo se encargaban del resto. “Fase 5.” Eso ya está mejor. No explica nada, pero asusta. Que el lector se pierda entre las páginas del periódico, o pase minutos frente al televisor esperando a que alguien se lo explique; si providencialmente no le queda claro, mañana es otro ejemplar vendido. Habrá que ingeniárselas para cuando lleguemos al límite: “Pandemia” ya no será noticia.
Francia lo resolvió fácil: “Gripe mexicana”, la llaman los diarios en París desde hace una semana. Qué lástima que no fueron los sudacas; el término es fuerte y quedaría perfecto para su propagación entre racistas. Pero como Europa es el ombligo del mundo, y de todos modos muy pocos saben bien dónde queda México, funciona lo mismo. Es lejos, es exótico, es perfecto.
Ya el gobierno de Felipe Calderón ha protestado. A la sombra de la Torre Eiffel, la embajada de México le ha puesto un hasta aquí a la prensa por discriminatoria. Habráse visto tal insolencia de estos periodistas, como si no supieran que la OMS hasta felicitó a las autoridades mexicanas por su destacada reacción ante el terrible mal. Otra cosa es que acá medio país los insulte por el fraude electoral, la crisis económica, el desempleo galopante, la violencia desatada, el narco a sus anchas y su impericia política, que no forman parte de las contingencias sanitarias globales. Una pena para Calderón que poco se pueda hacer ya para evitar la fase 6 de alerta, la pandemia mundial declarada. Ha de ser frustrante no poder erigirse como salvador del mundo, algo que lo reivindique así sea ante ojos extraños.
En lugar de eso, resulta que ahora México exporta no sólo mano de obra barata y drogas, también la muerte en forma de virus. Mexicanos que viven en Inglaterra, Estados Unidos, Francia, España, Suecia, Qatar, Hong Kong, Bolivia, Argentina o donde sea resienten ya el estigma que los medios en París explotan. Lo de menos son las bromas pesadas, que lo mismo calan; lo de más es que se les aísle socialmente y se les rechace como apestados.
Es cierto que son pocos casos, que la mayor parte del mundo se muestra solidario y sinceramente preocupado por nuestra suerte. Pero no faltan aquellos que encuentran en la coyuntura una salida a sus taras.
Un funcionario de seguridad en el séquito del presidente de Estados Unidos Barack Obama enfermó durante su reciente visita a México. A su retorno a casa, contagió a tres miembros de su familia, según informó la Casa Blanca. Luego, la primera muerte por influenza A H1N1 en territorio estadounidense: un bebé mexicano. Como si les hiciera falta otro pretexto, la paranoia en Estados Unidos fue casi automática.
En Nueva York, un conocido restaurante se queda sin clientes porque los cocineros son mexicanos. A una madre en New Jersey le piden que no envíe a sus hijos a la escuela. En los autobuses, la tez morena es sospechosa y, por las dudas, sujeta a desprecio. El vicepresidente Joe Bidden recomienda de plano mantenerse alejado de México, un país tan insalubre como viajar en el metro.
Casi todo el mundo recomienda no viajar a México. Hasta ahí, todo bien, que tampoco se trata de propagar el virus. Pero Cuba y Argentina, Perú y China, suspenden temporalmente vuelos hacia y desde México. Es inútil, tan fácil como llegar a la isla desde Panamá, o a Buenos Aires desde Santiago, como muchos están haciendo. Francia Intenta que la Unión Europea haga lo mismo entre los 27 Estados miembro, aun contra las recomendaciones de la propia OMS, y eso ya es pasarse, pero fracasa.
Dos personas con náuseas y fiebre hacen que un vuelo entre Cancún y Maryland, en Estados Unidos, sea recibido con bomberos y personal sanitario. Hasta entonces descubren que solamente estaban ebrios. Pero en Africa, otro vuelo queda retenido durante varias horas y casi es puesto en cuarentena porque un grupo de personas había estado en México.
La precaución y la prevención no sobran, pero a veces se rebasan los límites del sentido común y se expresa psicosis. Alicia acaba de llegar a vivir a Argentina, y me cuenta que su casera, como mucha otra gente, muestra una sincera preocupación por su familia, que ha quedado en México. Lo mismo les ocurre a otros amigos que viven en Buenos aires, La Plata, Rosario y Córdoba, beneficiarios de esa solidaridad. Eso reconforta.
Pero Alicia muestra también el otro lado del espejo, y cuenta que su casera “ya hasta separó los platos donde como y me ha pedido que no use las áreas comunes. Eso ha sido duro para mí, recién llegada. Tuve que asistir a un centro de salud y conseguir un certificado de que estoy sana y libre de síntomas. Por una parte se entiende la paranoia, pero no es grata la manera en la que me trataron ni en casa ni el hospital”.
Salvador Ruiz vive en Córdoba, es cantante y está dolido. “Los comentarios que escucho por la calle no me dejan más que hoy quedarme callado, por temor a ser agredido”. En Europa la cosa es peor. A la discriminación racial que le caracteriza se suma ahora una paranoia contra todo lo mexicano que raya en el insulto.
La xenofobia que se expresa en contra nuestra no está al tanto de lo que eso desata: un sentido de patrioterismo ramplón y estúpido que, a muchos, les hace capaces de guardarles un rencor tan eterno como paradójico a nuestros detractores, como a los españoles que conquistaron casi todo el continente y 500 años después no salimos del laberinto de nuestra soledad, mientras comemos tlacoyos y fabada. Tampoco personamos a los gringos, que nos robaron medio país en el siglo XVIII y desde entonces nos han impuesto lo que han querido, pero lo mismo todo el que puede vacacionar en Disneylandia. Yo prefiero Nueva York.
Muchos se desgarran las vestiduras, imbuidos del nacionalismo más rancio, y olvidan que la discriminación comienza en casa: al menos dos terceras partes de los mexicanos que han muerto en esta epidemia son pobres, viajaban en metro y carecían de acceso a la educación, al trabajo digno y a la salud. El miedo no conoce fronteras ni ideologías, las pandemias tampoco, y mucho menos la estupidez humana, que suele ser más contagiosa que cualquier otro virus.
