- British ship RDT Fort Rosalie will dock in Mexican waters between 6 and 10 February.
- This visit is another expression of the momentum in promoting bilateral cooperation between Mexico and the UK.
- The objective of this visit is to strengthen the links and maximize exchange in areas like innovation, technology, education, climate change and sustainable development.
RFA Fort Rosalie commanded by Captain Ross G. Ferris OBE, Royal Navy Official will arrive in the port of Veracruz on Monday, 6 February. Several activities will be organised involving the Mexican Navy, the Government of Veracruz, the Municipality of Veracruz, and the private sector, starting on the day of arrival and will go on for the next four days.
With a crew of 136 officers of the Royal Navy, the British ship will visit Veracruz as a part of the commitment made by FCO’s Secretary of State William Hague almost two years ago. This commitment set guidelines for the UK to renew and modernise its relations with Latin American countries. Mexico, expected to the 10th world economy by 2020, is clearly a priority country in this approach.
The programme will start with an official ceremony, in which a wreath will be laid at the seafront Beam in commemoration of the anniversary of the heroic performance of the Mexican Navy back in 1914. This agenda is intended to tighten the links, maximise exchange and showcase British experience in areas such as innovation, technology, education, climate change and sustainable development. All these are key areas of the GREAT campaign, which Prime Minister David Cameron launched worldwide last year.
High level meetings, official receptions, commercial presentations and workshops will be held both on board the ship and in venues around the port of Veracruz. Themes covered will include: rescue at sea, humane aid delivery, tackling and mitigating sea pollution, and an event on energy efficiency and climate change. The latter will be attended by the ship’s crew, HMA Ambassador Judith Macgregor, Dr. Javier Duarte de Ochoa, Governor of Veracruz (tbc) and Luz Carolina Gudiño, Municipal president of Veracruz. Group Captain Maurice Dixon will lead this presentation, which will also include implementers of sustainable projects funded by the British Embassy.
One day after a private reception on board RFA Fort Rosalie, crew member will visit a high school in Veracruz, while 50 students of the Navy Academy, state students and a group of teachers will visit the ship. Finally, the visit will be closed with a brotherly football match between the RFA Fort Rosalie and members of the Antón Lizardo Mexican Navy Academy.
With this visit, the UK acknowledges the Port of Veracruz as the most important port of Mexico and one of the top economies in Mexico. Veracruz has 7.5 million inhabitants and is the third largest state in Mexico. Its main economic sectors include industry, tourism and trade. 93.2% of the oil produced in Mexico comes from Veracruz.
